Reading at Trafalgar Infant School

At Trafalgar Infant School we encourage children to develop skills and to use the full range of strategies to become successful, fluent readers whilst developing a lifelong love of reading.
As a school we are determined that all children will learn to read, regardless of their background, need or ability and make sufficient progress to meet or exceed age related expectations in preparation for the next stage of their education.

Phonics Books

Our children take home a phonetically decodable text each week that has been carefully matched to their specific phonics level and follows our systematic synthetic phonics scheme - Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. The aim of this book is provide the opportunity for our children to practice blending and segmenting the sounds that they know.

Sharing Books

Every day the children also take home a book of their choice selected from a range of books that match their needs as well as providing an opportunity to broaden their vocabulary and practice their phonic sounds. Books shared via Bug Club and Phonics Bug are also sharing books.

In addition to these books our children choose a library book to take home each week and also have a class library and book corner full of books for them to read as a means to encourage their love of reading.

Supporting your child at home

Our E-school has lots of resources and links to help support your child's reading development.

In addition to this we also run regular parent workshops.

Assessment

Our Assessment Principles (which can be found under Learning & Teaching section on our policies page) support effective learning & teaching.
