The name of the school is in commemoration of the Battle of Trafalgar, the school's foundation stone being laid in 1905 on the one hundredth anniversary of this event.

As part of a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) agreement between the London Borough of Richmond and a private finance company, a completely new building was constructed in Meadway. This is the Early Years Centre which jointly accommodates the Infant School's Reception classes and a nursery run by a private company, Bright Horizons Day Nursery and Pre-schools. As part of the same agreement our original building has been refurbished and extended and accommodates our Y1 and Y2 classes. We share this site with Trafalgar Junior School.
